Hydration Booster Hacks: Encouraging Cats to Drink More Water

Explaining the low-thirst drive of cats, the urinary risks of dry food, and practical hacks (broths, fountains, ice cubes) to keep them hydrated.

The Cat's Natural Low-Thirst Drive

Domestic cats descended from desert wildcats, which adapted to obtain almost all their hydration directly from their prey. Because of this, cats have a low physiological thirst drive; they do not feel the urge to drink until they are already mildly dehydrated. Feeding an exclusive dry kibble diet can lead to concentrated urine, kidney stones, and feline lower urinary tract disease (FLUTD).

Simple Hacks to Boost Fluid Intake

  1. Go Flowing: Cats are naturally suspicious of standing water. Add a pet fountain with running water to stimulate their curiosity.
  2. Add Broth: Mix unsalted chicken broth (ensure it contains no onions or garlic) or warm water directly into their food.
  3. Separate Bowls: Keep water bowls away from food bowls. Cats in the wild do not drink near their kill to avoid water contamination.
